Cool I have a busted drum brake... HELP!!!

Well, the first issue is I can't get the bolt off so I can get to the brakes... It gets stuck on sometimes, I think its because the cable doesn't have a tensioning spring (you know, one that holds it off)... Are EZ-GOs supposed to have springs to keep the brakes from putting themselves on, and does anyone have a method for removing that huge axel bolt that holds the brake drum(cover) on... THANKS!!!

Heres some videos to get a better picture of my cart...

Hey MOTO..

If the cart that is pic'd in your "youtube" is the cart you are having problems with, it is just like the one I started with. And I had issues with the brakes being locked up when I went to pick it up, to the point of breaking my winch I had mounted on my trailer.

Easy fix for me:
Jack up the rear of the cart (one side at a time) take a small sledge hammer and give the brake arm a couple of good licks. Because I was not saving the the cables I cut them with a pair of bolt cutters. Once the cables were cut and the brake arm was smacked a couple of times then wheel turned freely. Brakes released. Then remove your tire and wheel and take the hammer and smack the brake drum a couple of good licks and it should pop loose. Pull it off the brakes. The hub will remain on the axel, just like most cars with drum brakes. If you are saving the cables find a way to disconnect them at the drums. If the cables are seized up to this point I wouldn't recommend saving them, cut them and replace them.

As far as removing the big gland nut...I got a socket to fit it and used my air wrench on it after removing the cotter pin. With the nut about half way off, smack the hub a couple of times to jar it loose. BUT don't hit the studs you'll either mess them up or knock them out completely. If you have access to a puller you can use that to pull the hub off.

Once the hub and the drum is off the brakes shoes and all attaching appeatious is in the wide open. Easy to change out and clean. You can also remove the backing plate very easy at this point if you desire to.

Hope this helps you.

The cables are removed by taking the cotter key out and pulling the pin out. Then take the wheel off and the nut off the axle shaft and then back the star wheel inside the hub off as much as you can. This is a time consuming process. Then beat the you know what out of it.
