Default Turf II Gas now grinds instead of going Forward

I just bought a 1999 Turf II Gas from a private party, with a new engine that was put in during March of this year.

There was a spring connected to the shift lever on top of the transaxle to keep it from popping out of FORWARD. (Picture below.) The cart only went Forward with that setup and I knew it when I bought it.

There was a homemade bracket in back of the F/R switch under the seat that was loose and not connected to anything. (Picture below.) I jury rigged the home made bracket (that was on the cart when I got it) that holds the shift cable but it is slightly to the left of the original plastic position.

Now, when I try shift into FORWARD the gears grind and the cart won't move. I put the spring back on and the gears still grind. Without the spring I can shift into Reverse and Neutral and it goes into Reverse and Neutral, but when I put it in Forward it grinds. When I push the shift lever on the transaxle into Forward I can't get the cart to move forward and as I move that lever I can get some grinding and no forward movement. I have tried moving the transaxle shift lever a little forward and a little backward and many positions in between and the cart won't go Forward. The spring is still connected.

I was hoping that replacing the broken shifter bracket would solve the problem but I guess the guy knew more than he was telling me about the "transmission might need adjusting."

Are the Forward gears toast or is there something I can do to make it will go forward?

I've been thinking about this all day yesterday!

Question... Have you tried disconnecting the shifter cable from the transaxle arm,
and then try to manually shift it at the transaxle arm?

Don, You're a genius.

I just came in from the 29 degree temperature to do just that.

VOILA! It works the way it did when I got it.

I'm going to get a new bracket to replace the broken one and then I may be able to adjust the shift cable properly for FRN.

Do you have a service manual? I couldn't find any parts for the electric lift for the dump in the IPL and I'd like to add one.

A genius??? I think... NOT!

The reason I brought it up was, I compared ckiguys shifter cable setup with yours,
and ckiguys cable was adjusted further out then yours at the shifter,
so I just figured that the cable was not extending out (or retracting in) far enough to get it into gear where it should be!

No... I don't have a service manual for Carryall/Turf II's,
BUT... here's a couple things from my manual to try to help you with your cable adjustment!

Good info. Thanks.

When I get my new bracket I'll try to adjust the cable so the transmission works correctly, with no grind. :-)

The text in the pictures will help. My transmission appears to be opposite from yours. The Forward gear engages when the cable it extended and Reverse when the cable is retracted. No big deal because I will set the transmission to Neutral and tighten the nuts. Hopefully Forward and Reverse will be in the right place when I shift up front.

Thanks, again.
