Question 1988 EZGO Marathon: Does it Idle?

Hey guys, i bought a 1988 EZGO Marathon about 2 months ago from a guy for about 100 dollars. The engine came in a box and he said all the pieces were there. I had to get a few new things but he was pretty much right. Finally got the motor running yesterday; however, it seems like it idles like a car. If u turn the key you can hear the motor run and see the the generatir motor is turning. It was my understanding that this type of cart was supplied power by turning the key, but the motor didnt start until the pedal was pushed. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

....we also didnt have the belt hooked up that goes betwen the driven and drive clutch, so maybe that little bit of resistance would not have allowed that to happen?

Thabks again!

I would guess that the throttle microswitch has been mashed or it was defective and someone has bypassed it. If you look under the driver's seat you can see the rod from the throttle and you will find the microswitch. One wire goes to the ignition switch and the other goes to the solenoid. It may just need adjusting.

With this diagram, you can see that the key switch, neutral limit switch, and pedal switch are all hooked in a series. All three have to be making contact for the starter to turn.

Also, are there any negative effects of this override? Will it drain the battery?

the negative effect is that the cart isn't actually "running" until You hit the pedal and it gets fuel - what it's doing is just turning the starter and engine which will drain your battery and put incredible stress on your starter, etc (until it burns out) ...
