Now what's wrong with the Cart after new batteries
SO, 6 new 8 volt batteries, I didn't change the cables but filed them clean, charged to the fullest ( as per my previous post/question ) but now the cart seems suddenly slow and was shuddering!! I checked the battery nuts and a few were loose so I wrenched them down gorilla tight, put it back on the ( NEW) charger and went for a ride, no shudder but still slow ??? It's a 97 Club car, so what's up, and is there any adjustment for upping the speed ??:

If those connections are overtightened it can lead to melted terminals on the battery so be careful. They just need to be snug. Put a volt meter on the pack and see what your voltage is..

Battery nut torque is 110 inch lbs, I think.

I'm getting 9-10 mph but seems to struggle just a bit at first to get up to speed. Goes 7-8 right away then a few secs to get to 9-10

Re: Now what's wrong with the Cart after new batteries
Just a word of caution for everybody, When tightening battery cable nuts loose connections and 'gorilla tight' are both incorrect. Both can lead to battery failure.
These are electrical connections - not tire lug nuts. Proper torque is as stated above 110 inch pounds which is about 9 ft pounds or about 1/4 to 1/2 turn after finger tight. Just beyond snug is what we are looking for here. The steel terminal studs are cast in a lead base. This base is relatively soft as far as metals are concerned and it is easily deformed. Pee Wee Herman types note, Loose connections arc which creates heat and melts the lead base. Gorilla types note. Over tightening these nuts will pull the stud from the base. Both of these conditions will cause battery failure. |

An old school method of watching to make sure you are not spinning a stud...we used to mark the top of the bolt/stud with a permanent marker...just one line across the top of the stud...that way when tighting the nut with an open end wrench you could see if the line moved...especially helpful on motor studs.😀

The battery terminal studs don't have to spin to be damaged.
They can be pulled straight up from their original position. |
