Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
Have a AA0323 DS series cart for about 3 weeks.
It's been running fine until now. I heard arcing, opened access cover, resistor was smoking, controller was warm. Now cart is dead, no solenoid click. Pulled resistor and checked it read 247.3 ohms. Is this right? Noticed there's no diode on solenoid. Is this right? I pulled nuts off solenoid studs to see if the diode had broke off, but there's no rings on studs, so I would have to say it's not had one since I've had the cart. All the wiring diagrams show a diode. Did some not use them ? My controller was warm did I fry it? |

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
I was looking at the wrong diagrams, I did not realize is has an Mcor. No diode on those.
I still wondering why the resistor had a meltdown and what other damage did it do? Solenoid ohmed at 247, so I put it back on, no click or anything. |

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
Sounds like the solenoid is toast and all the current was trying to get through that resistor (ergo the heat). With the rear tires off the ground, try jumping the big studs on the solenoid to see if it will run with the solenoid bypassed.
PS- Resistor values-36v. 250 ohms 48v. 470 ohms . Last edited by tag50; 02-15-2017 at 02:43 AM.. Reason: PS |

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
You probably should add a diode to the Solenoid, specially if You still use the OBC on the negative side of the Solenoid coil.
It will also prolong the life of the micro-switch inside the MCOR that activates the Solenoid. Since the Solenoid coil is testing correct, either the contacts are damaged or the activation is missing. You need to measure the small terminals on the Solenoid to see if You are missing the positive side (Key Switch+MCOR+FNR) or the negative side (OBC). |

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
Thanks guys, the solenoid cooked.
Before I install new solenoid should I be looking for anything beside loose connections? |

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
The OEM solenoid had a built in diode..... identified by a red + sign next to the positive activation terminal.

Re: Will A Series Cart Run Without Diode
Replaced solenoid. Wiring diagram shows 3 small wires with cable going to big+ post. I only had cable and 1 small wire on that post.
Solenoid made it run ,but I have other problems, when I step on pedal , it goes to full speed, there is no in between. Controller is getting warm. I think I smell something. No heat at solenoid. After 3 tries it shut down. Now nothing. Solenoid clicks. What should I look for next? Thanks,Muddog |
