Default Vc 460 25hp

I purchased a cart with the 460 25 hp engine in it.. I got it because it was gas and had been remodeled not for the engine..

The brushings on the starter are worn and it looks old so I would like to just replace it with a new one and get the old one redone to have a spare. Vegas Cart said to order the GX390 which doesn't have the belt adapter on it..

The one I pulled off looks like this: Old Starter

And the GX390 looks like this:

GX390

They don't even look the same.. Has anyone replaced one and should I just go with the old style??

Since VC doesn't support the 460 anymore, it is a mess..

That is not the 460 engine's starter. Vegascarts never used engine starters on theirs. They were not reliable enough on a golf cart with a modded engine. That is the Starter/Generator from the cart. Vegascarts sold the mounts but never the S/G's themselves. You need some input from some of the Club Car experts on here on where to get the best replace for your S/G unit.

Your "old style" is a golf cart starter/generator. So it starts the engine and charges the battery etc, does both jobs. If you eliminate that and use an engine mounted starter, you'll be able to start the engine with a key switch like a car, idle the engine, and shut it off with the key switch. You'll loose the charging ability, as the VC engine doesn't have an alternator, so you're battery will go dead all the time and you'll have to charge it regularly. Some people have installed small tractor/auto alternators to their VC setups, but that usually requires fabricating a bracket to hold and adjust the alternator and belt, quite a bit of work. There used to be some kits for that floating around.

The VC440/460 engine was designed to be used with the stock starter/generator, and that's how it was marketed. So if that's how yours is set up, I'd just replace the starter/generator or have it rebuilt, you'll have far less work.

A lot of members here use David Hicks at the sponsor revolution carts for genuine club car parts. I see they have a genuine S/G but it is not cheap. Again though some of the non genuine S/G's don't last.
