Default Ezgo ignition questions

I have an 89 gas EZGO that I am rebuilding. There was almost nothing left of the wiring when I started. I have since replaced most of the wire and components but I think I have something wrong. My first question is: does the solenoid stay engaged while the mother is running? I installed a new key switch and the engine will run while I am cranking with the key, but if I release the key to the accessories position the engine stops. Have I used the wrong key switch for this application?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

yes the solenoid stays engaged while running.

And yesbyou used the wrong switch. Check the sticky section for wiring diagrams. The key switch is just "on" or "off". You could verify by just jumping the 2 wires together for "on"

Key is off and on, starter cranks engine over when you step on the gas pedal. There is a microswitch on the linkage that controls this.

If all the original wiring is gone, odds are the microswitches are gone as well. Some people like a key start and let the engine idle, it's not something I would do as it would be possible for the running cart to take off on it's own.
