Default siezed cam

i am new to carts. bought a non running 03 pre mci cart. got it to run. tried to take a quick test spin before i did more work and after about 5 min, engine stopped and seized. it had fresh oil in it right before i tested it so i know it was new and full. the carnage; the brand new oem belt i put on a few hours earlier stripped several teeth on. when it did it rotated the cam pulley from the pin and took off a small piece of material off that centers the pulley. after it cooled down, everything moves freely now. That being said I know I at least need a new cam and pulley. Question is, how durable are the heads in the cam journal area for problems like this? I have not had a chance to pull engine apart and check the cam journal yet. Im assuming that it had a oil issue. there is just a little bit of shavings inside the valve cover by the cam journal.

That's a tough call without tearing into it. These engines are pretty tough though. Tear it down and upload some pictures.
Without knowing anything about one of these engines it always good to have a pressure gauge or light working. I just feel better knowing I got pressure than trash one if it don't.
Most have the oil sending unit screwed in but not connected to anything but the white wire coming from it.
Used parts are hard to find as they have become rare. 2003 was the last year they made the pre-mci engine. I do love these engines though as they will withstand the test of time if taken care of. They are also much better to me than the Kawasaki but thats just old me

so far the only thing I have had a time finding is the timing gear. I found new or used cams, and used heads if need be. I did find a billet aluminum pulley though. I will for sure hook something up with oil light or gauge.

I see a new camshaft at the ezgo site. If this is the case then I got some gold.

I have found for 75 used so far. Still awaiting another call back. Can buy new aftermarket for like 175.

Ive got a good timing gear set... all of the gears and tensioner. Those cam gears are hard to find and the ones you do find are mega overpriced. Or billet fancy (not sure what the point of that is...)

Only problem is I won't be able to get to it for a few more weeks. Depending on what kind of hurry you're in.

Pull the head and check the cam journal though. I'm guessing from my personal experiences, that's going to be a problem.

I'm going to try to pull head tonight if I get time. Here are some pictures of the aftermath.

More carnage update. Doesn't look so hot. Cam would spin, but had to tap it out of head.

I think you might find more as you continue tearing into it. Running an engine without oil is not good on these engines. Meaning you spend more than the engine is worth to get it back going.

Maybe find a better engine out there that won't cost much to rebuild is one option. Lot of people remove these engines for other upgrades and maybe they got one that has not been run without oil pressure.

You could also call Motors and More and see what they got after explaining what has happened to yours. I wish you luck

Thanks, I'll give them a call. I have been searching for used. Every place I call doesn't have anything complete, just parts.
