An 8 volt reading reflects only about 50% charge. Full charge with good batteries should give reading of 8.45 or better. Check again using G Man's advice for reading two more digits. Your mix of batteries are not too good an idea as well. You might compare specs on your batteries to a Trojan. It is either "pay for it now or you will pay for it later" when it comes to batteries.

Again for your reading enjoyment.

1. New Batteries require 10-12 complete charge run cycles to reach their peak .
A charge cycle is , until the Charger cuts itself off.
2. The charger is set to turn itself off after 16 hours , even if the Batteries did not reach
full charge to prevent Battery Damage.
3. It is a good practice to replace Battery Cables each time you replace Batteries (5-6) years.
4. Overheating of Cables is generally caused by bad or weak connection.

Many Thanks for your response. I have someone smarter than me looking at it Thursday. I am sure it is related to the new batteries as you suggest. I will change out the wires also on your recommendation. Thanks again Jim
