225AH battery vs. 180AH battery

I was just was given a '94 CC (resister cart). It had 6-6v trojan T-105's from 2001! Needless to say they are completely bad.

Trojan T-105's are rated at 225AH. I have access to almost new 180AH batteries basically for free. By going with a lesser capacity battery how much range am I given up? Will I loose any torque?

Thanks for the link, I've seen the comparison but those batts cost money. I have access to basically free 180AH batts so I plan on using them unless it will run like crap with a lesser capacity battery.

This is my first cart but my experiance in the remote control car world going from a 1500ma 7.2v battery to a 2500ma 7.2v battery produced not only longer run time but much more torque (quickness) as well.

Agreed I'll loose 20% range with a 180AH battery but will it still run well?

Another related question. Would converting from resistor to controller gain run time with everything else being equal?

There may be some diminished torque at maximum draw but it may be very small compared to free batteries! Their expected lifespan may be shorter too but, again free verses $600 !?
Converting to solid state will increase your run time. How much depends upon your set up, terrain, load, and driving habits. It is enough to make up the lost time on the battery downsize. Money better spent

Thanks. I've read up on discharge rates. The t-105 has a 1000 cycle at 50% discharge. The batteries I get for $2 (not free) have a 1000 cycle at 65% discharge. That tells me I can push them a little harder which should make up for the lesser AH rating.

OK my almost free deep cycle batteries are all installed (18 - 12v batteries to be exact). I have three banks of 6 - 12v batteries each in parallel, the 3 banks are then wired in series to give me a total of 36v at 180AH.

It's a resister/v-glide cart so my only upgrade was 4 gauge wiring replacing all 6 gauge wiring. There's tons of 6 gauge wiring on a v-glide resister cart I found.

So today I started with a fully charged pack (39.3v) and drove for hours off and on. I got tired of riding so lets kids ride. We stopped riding when the pack dropped to 36v (50% DOD). Today is it's first cycle charge and I'm very pleased with the range I experienced today.

Best thing is the speed. An 18 year old, 36v resister cart hit 16-17 mph on level ground. I don't know how fast they were new but I feel it's operating in top condition now.

Initial results seem good. If my maths is right you have 18 30A/H batteries in series/parallel config. The only concern would be longlivity due to the high amperage drawn by the motor and 30 A/H batteries are unlikely to be built with the thick plates used on typical golf cart batteries. Their 1000 recharges at 65 % DOD may well be based on moderate amps. However nothing ventured nothing gained

Nothing better then getting a POS sparky cart and take it for the first run and it's better then you expected.
