Default burnt wires

I recently got a 1981 Club Car. When I got it the batteries were dead. I got new batteries, then the buggy would only go about 3 mph, and less than that up hill. As I was test driving it with the new batteries in, I heard a strange sound under the seat. When I lifted the seat I found two wires on fire. One of the wires went from the FR switch to the solenoid. The other went from the solenoid to the motor. Both wires were on fire near ths solenoid. Can anyone tell me what went wrong, and how I might fix it?

Bad connections cause heat. That is most likely what caused your problem.

Why do you suppose the low speed? From everything I have read, it seems to be the speed switch regulator which I do not see on the above diagram. I do see it in the buggies, and it is a small box with several colored wires running off of it. It sits just to the right and under the FR switch. Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I dont know much about these electric carts.

Can you push the cart? You might be trying to drive it with the brakes dragging.

Verify wiring, no resistors or wires grounded to frame and pull motor to verify no bearing seizure. Btw you can still push the cart with bad motor bearing. Been there did that.
