Default 12 volt solenoid

Will a 12 volt solenoid work on my older cart, or does it need a 36 volt solenoid,
I've heard it both ways??? Can anyone solve this for me?

You should use a 36 volt solenoid....

No matter if you have a gas or electric golf cart, you can only use GOLF CART solenoids on these things. An automotive 12v solenoid will work initially on a golf cart but it will not last as it is designed for 'momentary' use and the golf cart requires a constant use solenoid.

In electric carts the same is true with the addition of the high amperage present. The solenoid has to be rated for the amperage used to activate it and for the amount of amperage (current) going through it. Hope this helps.

I paid about $25 for a replacement 36V continuous-duty solenoid for my '84 Marathon at the local EZGO dealer. My original solenoid worked OK, but the insulator was melted on one of the high-current posts.

In addition to everyone else's response, you will also risk burning up your micro switches in your activation circuit! A 12V solenoid will draw a bunch more amps if used in a 36V circuit!
