Radio antenna

Looking to do a radio install soon...probably going seperate 12v battery, distribution block..

if I have to use an extra antenna...any suggestions? powered antenna?

I used the Dual Electronics MAW40 Car/Marine Wire Antenna - tucked it under the front cowl and it works great. I tried several brands of wire antennas and this one worked best for me. I am about 40 miles from the broadcast towers in my area -- pickup all the major stations.

There was a thread not to long ago discussing this...A regular car antenna uses the autos frame as a ground so using one of those on an electric cart never gives you a good signal...just for some input...

I just installed a kenwood radio on an electric cart and used the ribbon antenna and stuck it spread across the underneath of the front fender and it works great, no issues at all. You can buy them pretty cheap from Ebay.

camaroluvz28 is on the right track about car antennas.
They use the metal car body as a ground plane, so the metal rod sticking up in the air is only 1/2 the antenna.
Use one designed for fiberglass bodies (Boats or Cars) on a plastic bodied golf cart.

By "powered" antenna, do you mean an antenna that goes up when the radio is turned on and lowers when it is turned off, or an antenna with a built in RF amplifier for picking up weaker stations?

The type that raise/lower need about a foot or two below the surface they mount on, so mounting one of those on a cart might be tricky.

If you have any high power radio station transmitting antennas close by, the RF amp type may not work too well, but they do help in fringe areas.


Also, before investing a lot of money in an antenna and drilling hole in your cart, you might want to set up your radio on a table with a makeshift antenna and have someone drive your cart by it.
Some carts make more electrical noise than any radio can handle and some radios won't work with even the quietest of carts.
Of course, CD and MP3 players work in most carts.

I have seen some antennae on Ebay that looks like they hook up to your battery..or powered

what I am hoping to get by with is one that I can put under front cowlling and dont have to have it mounted on top of cart.

Same one I used and it works fine !Bought mine from Advanced auto parts for like 26.00 $
