Default Wide Open Or Stop!!

My cart was being used at Ocean Lakes Campground for cruising. It was running around 2-3 mph for about 35-40 minutes. Suddenly it had nothing but wide open or stop, there was a red glow under the cart and some smoke coming from around the throttle linkage under the seat. The cover for the( I think) throttle pot. was HOT HOT HOT!!!! Motor and other components were ok, not very hot. Now I'm trying to figure out my next move. Any ideas on this?

Can you post a pic of 'what i think is the throttle pot'?

Unfortunatly, copper contact/resistor controlled carts really cant be run at slow speeds, expetially for long periods of time. Unlike computer controlled, you are always useing the 36 volts when the accelerator pedal is pushed, the slower speeds are created by battery voltage being "disapaited" thru the "resistor coils". Go slow...resistor coil gets red hot. Check for damaged resistor coil (broken windings and melted wires), probably even damaged moving contact (on the accelerator board assy). Good luck on the repair and try to run "wide open throttle" as much as you can. Showed only be about 10-12 mph.

Sorry, in my excitement I forgot about the details! It is a 1991 G9 that has an upgraded motor( top speed 19 mph.) I think it is the accelerator board( I really don't know.) I'll try to get some pics in a little while. And thanks for your response!

Unfortunately Dave is RIGHT ... you have an early resistor coil cart.... You can not drive at slow speeds without melting the coils and or the speed wiper assembly. Good time to convert to a solid state controller or get a newer cart? You can still buy all the parts to rebuild the speed wiper.... that and all new cables may get you going pretty good?

Maybe Dave will come back with some more of his Yamaha expertise... when it comes to Yamaha, I just sleep at the Holiday Inn

I'm learning, give me a break. LOL LOL I've only got about $1500 in this cart even after 15 cans of wally world spray paint. It is proving to be a very educational experience. It would be the same for me if it were a CC or ezgo or Tomberlin, I'm just learning!! LOL LOLOL

Do you know the name of the part in the pics? how expensive are they?

Trk, check this link. I used to be able to download parts lists from here when I had my Yami.
http://yamahagolfcar.com/partsandservice/

I just tried it and it was retuning errors. Give it some time and I'm sure they'll have it fixed.

Thanks, SNS! I bookmarked that page. At least I now know what to call the thing I'm working with. Have you ever rebuilt one of these or do I have to buy new?
