I have just gone through the same rebuild dilemna. We have an 86 Marathon, bearings seized on the crank. After much research I found that marathon setup is not easy to swap into due to the reverse and the sideways position of the pully on the rear end. I finally decided to rebuild my motor completely( not too much $ actually) and rebuild the rest of the lift structure.

There was a fellow selling a re-built 2 stroke EZ-Go engine in the classified section here for (iirc) $150 to fund another project if that helps at all.

The 295 Robins is still listed in the for sale section. Your other option is to go with an ATV engine that has its own reverse. The rear end is your biggest obstacle, as the 2 stroke run backwards so there is no need for a reversing rear end. They simply turn off and start up backwards when you put it in reverse. You can go with a chinese made ATV w/ reverse pretty reasonable. And they can be dependable. I have been using one for 2 years now and it starts up and runs every time I turn the key. But if the Robbin is available It would be the easiest by far.
