Default 1995 medlist ezgo, problems in switching to REV and FWD aslo grinding sounds?

My golf cart has one issue that i would like to find out whats wrong... Ok so when I put it in to reverse it the cable onlt pulls the spring half way down do it in about newturle but if you step on the gas bit it will lock into place maing a buzzing sound. when you switch it to forward it does the same thing??? is the cable loose and need to be tighted of what??? on to a different topic it also make a gringing sound when you first start off slow?? are the gers getting bad?
