Default What is the purpose of the relay behind the dash?

I'm now working on my '06 Villager 6 trying to get the horn & brake lights to work and will be installing turn signals when my flasher arrives. It appears to already be wired for turn signals (wires are there) and I found the problem with the brake lights. It had a micro switch stuck open and a wire from the relay was not powering the lights so I tapped into one that does.

So, what is the purpose of the relay behind the dash? It is bolted to the passenger side cowling frame (just to the left of the recessed storage) and is a PITA to get to without the cowling removed. It appears to have a wire from the key switch going to it. Is it "supposed" to only provide power to the accessories when the key is on?

There's no telling what the PO did to this cart and the wiring diagram I found online doesn't offer much help for this section either. I haven't really dug deep into this, but I will once I have everything in hand needed to complete the job and then I will remove the front cowling to tackle all the issues at once.

Also, can I just tap into the brake light wire for the rear turn signals?

That was disconnected also...at least the one behind the dash. The one under the rear seat was working. Is this "relay" just a (+) block for accessories?

Start looking at Section 12 E, here (2007 Villager 6/8, but should be similar/same as yours):

Download a copy to your computer . . .

It is designed to only send power to the brake light circuit when the key is on. All of the rest of the lights are unaffected by this relay. Only Brake lights.
