Default Battery upkeep

The guy I bought my new cart from said that when the water levels get low, to suck out all of the remaining water, then mix a solution of distiller water and Epsom salt and refill them to 1/4" below the bottom edge of the caps. Does this sound like it is good for the batteries? In my old cart, I would just top them off with distilled water every now and again.
Let me know what you think.

Epsom salt MAY provide a little bit of extended life for a weak/old battery, but I would not use it as a matter of routine maintenance . . sucking out the "old" remaining water is also removing the acid electrolyte . . . the only thing that "evaporates" from a wet cell battery is the water, which is why one replenishes the "water" level of a battery . . .
