Default Tech install

I just installed a cheap little tech with induction pickup. There are settings for firing once per revolution and twice per revolution. I thought this would fire once per revolution but the tech seems like it is reading fast. I set it to twice per revolution and it seems about right. How many times per revolution does it fire? It is a 88 2 cycle engine.

normally 2 stroke fire once each revolution. Ezgo engines are reveisble, so you have a fwd and rev firing points. Ezgo 2 cycle have 2 firings per revolution because the rotor has 2 bumps on it. Each direction one is a real firing and the other is wasted, so set yours to 2 firings per rev. You could have used a auto tach also, put trigger wire on the - of coil and set your tach on back to 4 cylinders, which is 2 sparks per. rev.

OK, I never worked on the electronic ignition on this cart. I have worked on the older point ignition on older ez-go. Unless my memory is slipping badly there is only 1 lobe on the crank to open the points so it can only fire 1 time per revolution. If I am right about the point ignition , why would the electronic ignition have to fire 2 times per revolution? I know you are correct because the tech is correct when set to 2 times per revolution.
THANKS

Your cart has one magnetic pick-up. The bumps on rotor pass by the pick-up and send pulse to ignitor, which fires coil. TDC is between the two trigger points .You need to have timing advanced 18-20 deg to fire the cylinder in each direction. Seems like i recall there were two sets of points back in 79.

Greetings ldj1002,

Does the information that came with the Tachometer, say 1 firing for each cycle of the engine or 2 firings for each cycle of the engine? Or, does it say for each revolution of the engine?
