Re: Terrible Handling, not safe....
Just some info that might help people: toe on a stock 12mph cart is a lot different than a lifted one. Since my cart has hit 38mph gps I had to play with toe to get it right. Toe in makes (a lifted 22 tire cart) very sensitive and it darts left and right. Toe out makes the cart unresponsive, it drifts left and right and is sluggish to steering input. In between those is the right spot at zero or tiny toe out to keep the cart straight and calm. I adjusted and tested on the road to get it right.
Shocks, they are the most important thing on a cart or car to keep it under control, they must work or you are in trouble at any higher speed. The rear end suspension makes a big difference. If the rear is stiff the steering will be calmer, this is why older carts like mine don't sway because my rear is a swing arm and does not articulate. The ride is harder, that is the tradeoff. But you can put stiffer shocks on an articulating rear, or lean the shocks in, both will help. Tires, they also affect things. I rode a cart with 2 ply tires and it was scary just because of the tires. Your pressure also changes things, pressure front vs rear changes things. A little more in the rear is usually helpful, the rear has the most weight on it anyway. Too much pressure can make the tire balance on the center of the tread and sway around some. Too little the sidewall can flex more and cause similar or worse results, and also will slow you down. ATV rated tires with 3 or more ply are usually more sturdy in the sidewall. That is what I run, they get less punctures as well. Another issue is the lift itself, the higher you go the less stable the cart is. You can run spacers to widen the cart and that helps, offset wheels are a must. I only have enough lift to clear the tires and I can corner fairly hard on trails, but again my cart rides (and corners) harder because of the swingarm rear. Any play or wear in steering or suspension parts is going to come out in poor steering! |
