Battery Cable length and gauge

Anyone have any data on performance of batteries with different cables?

ie. how does a battery set up with 12" 4 gauge cables compare to a set up with 36" 6 gauge cables.

By my reckoning the resistance would be some 5 times that on the latter cables.

But does it really matter?
