1992 Ezgo textron not running

Bought 1992 ezgo textron 36volt cart as is. Previous owner says quit on him and let sit for a while. Batteries all dead but Not wanting to invest too much in batteries before knowing issue, I temporarily wired 3-12 volts to see if it would power up. Pressed pedal several times, cart ran in reverse real sporadic but ran ok after backing up a bit. Forward ran ok for a minute. Let cart set, same thing happened. Sporadic and run after pressing pedal numerous times. Last time it ran, it Became real weak coming up driveway and now can't get to fire at all. Not real mechanical and been reading a lot online but don't know where to start but any suggestions would be appreciated. Worried it may be in motor??

What battles you use
3 12 volt golf cart batts? 3 12volt car batts ?

If 3 12 volt car batts, a good test , but will be weak
Sound like it works

to run properly you'll need more amps
6 X 6 volt golf cart batts

Thanks GolferDave. I took 3 marine batteries out of my boat just to test. The cart did run a few minutes at a time. Once I stopped and tried to go again it might go after pressing pedal 5 or 6 times. It finally quit all together. I will have to get the 6 volt batteries but thought the 12 volts would run the cart to make sure everything else ok. ??
