Default 90 marathon wiring question

I'm having trouble loading the diagram picture but here is my question anyway. Should the ignition wire run straight to the positive terminal on the battery or should it run to the solenoid?

It depends on which drive system you have, resistor or controller.

I have the speed controller version. I also have a resistor cart and saw the wire go to the solenoid so that is why I asked the question. I also tested the solenoid by hooking up 2 6volt batteries in series and ohmed it out. got no click and read open so I assumed it was a bad solenoid. I then checked my solenoid on my resistor cart that runs and got the same readout. Now I'm not sure if I am testing either correctly. Any suggestions?

It'll take about 30V to get the solenoid to energize.

You should get continuity between the two smaller terminals (coil) with an Ohmmeter.

You'll get an open between the two larger terminals (high current contacts) until the solenoid is energized.

Just want to clarify that I should get continuity without it being energized?

I get 170 ohms on my 77 cart solenoid without being energized and the solenoid on my 90 solenoid reads open without being energized.

so I hooked up 30 volts to the 77 solenoid small terminals and got the clicking noise and continuity between the large terminals. all i get on the 90 solenoid is open and no clicking no matter which terminals I hook to. I will assume this is a bad solenoid.

These diagrams that I can print are very helpful. Thanks for all your answers today. still trying to figure how to properly respond on here and get the answers I need without exactly knowing how to ask the question. lol

Heres some notes from from other posts here on the forum , but having a good Solenoid I haven't done any of these test myself . so wont be much help except this .
and yes, learning how to use a forum is confusing at first , but just keep searching around and use the search link above and you can usually find what you need by researching the site
.
.Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. remove all wires, restorer , and diode from solenoid
test 1
Connect an volt meter, set on continuity, place on the two large terminal studs. The meter should indicate no continuity, Replace the solenoid if continuity is present.
test 2
Using jumper wires attach from main positive and main negative of battery pack to the two small solenoid studs, polarity is not important. You should hear a click as the solenoid engages, and the meter should indicate continuity on the two large terminals. Replace the solenoid if continuity is not present.
if solenoid clicks rapidly solenoid is bad.
.
Clip your meter leads to the two large terminals on the solenoid. Set meter to a setting close to 200v DC, so you can read 36v. When the solenoid clicks, the voltage reading should drop to zero, indicating the difference from one side to the other is zero. That would be a good reading for a good solenoid.
