I have a 93 Marathon with a 4" lift and locks up sometimes. I was just gonna live with it, glad I saw this thread.

Why not loosen the adjuster on the drums? It's possible when you did it initially the got to tight. The adjuster is self adjusting when you hit the brakes but once it's to tight it does not loosen. I did my lift today and pulled them all apart and cleaned them up and adjusted them.

Some members have swapped the backing plates from one side to the other. Then the brake cable is on the top and not on the bottom.

For future readers: all of these were great ideas to remedy my problem of the brakes locking. In the end, the solution for me was to buy a passenger brake cable and replace the drivers side cable with it. ($38 eBay). Easy, effective fix. Thanks to all who chimed in!

Nearly 2 years later and wanted to let you know that this last tid bit of information you left helped someone out (me). I'm completing an 89 marathon rebuild and just installed the lift to find the brake cables too tight. Thank you for following up with what helped solve your issue.
