So if I leave the speed sensor off the cart will run but I will have no Regen. Is this how I should run the cart all the time?

DCX has no way to read the motor speed sensor, that controller just never had a way to even read it. While the DCX does offer some "regen" capability, it is "dumb" without a speed sensor. And there is No way you can adjust it "on the fly", or have more "modes" for the kids and stuff with that older controller. (THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE CONFIRMED WITH OTHERS BEFORE USE) If I recall correctly, the Club Car IQ map is a "soft" one that is safe for almost any motor. Not over-taxing, or pushing the motor, but not much risk of hurting it either. Would not give best performance, but not damaging it. Please confirm this before taking it as the spoken words.

So if I am leaving the dcx controller behind and installing the XCT 500 is it best for my application of hill climbing to connect the speed sensor or leave it disconnected?

An XCT-xxxxx-PDS is a dog without the speed sensor attached.

To get full performance, you need the speed sensor input to the controller for proper field mapping as well as regen braking and without the max speed limiting available only with the speed sensor connected, it is possible to explode a motor going down a steep hill.
