12V battery/batteries question

My rxv has 4 12V batteries. After charging over night I unplug and do 2 things. Check the specific gravity and the water level. My gravity readings are on the top of the cart, even before temp adjustment says add a few points. But when the water level is low and I add distilled water it sometimes boils as I'm adding.

Is this normal. Or as Mel Brooks would say, AB normal?

I believe batteries are from Deka

Pouring water into concentrated sulfuric acid causes a violent exothermic reaction, so lab protocols dictate pouring concentrated acid into water to dilute it, however the acid in batteries is only about a 30% concentration, or less, so the exothermic reaction ought to be fairly mild, if there is one.

What SG readings are you getting?

I'll let you know tommorow. I bought the cart used and the batteries looked low on water. I didn't have my hydrometer but indicate I would come back to test.

Do you think he threw something in the batteries overnight? If so what would it have been? Concentrated sulfuric acid?

Forgot yesterday. Today 1.325 and temp says add.

What make/model are batteries?

When checking SG, the electrolyte should be at correct level and the battery pack fully charged. If the level is low, the SG will be high.

1.325 is higher than it ought to be for any of deep cycle batteries that I have SG data on.

No sure what you mean by electrolyte.

I check the level after a full nights charge. The ex-ray reads hi for pack voltage and my meter is similar maybe like 54.5

The liquid in the battery is the electrolyte. It is a mixture of sulfuric acid and distilled water.

Pure water has an SG of 1.000 and if you add 30% pure sulfuric acid by weight to it, the resulting SG is about 1.300.

Two ways to up the SG.
1. Remove water
2. Add acid

Water is used during normal operation, but acid isn't, so if the fluid level inside the battery is lower than it should be, the SG will be higher than it should be

What brand and model 12V batteries do you have??????????
