Default Only runs at top speed

Hi there-
I hope somone can help me.
We have an older electric golf cart that only goes when the pedal is down to the floor. And then it jerks forward and takes off like a rocket.
I also noticed some sparks under the seat.
Does anyone know what part we may want to try to replace?
Thanks for your help-
Amber and Steve

If it is a resistor drive cart, resistor coil R-1 is open

You have a 1988 Marathon cart with a resistor type drive.

The rectangular box with the 4 cables attached on top contains 3 resistor coils and one of the is bad.

The cart has 4 speeds and in the 1st speed the electricity has to pass through all three resistor coils to get to the motor, in the 2nd speed it goes through two coils, in the 3rd speed it goes through one coil and in the 4th speed, the battery is connected directly to the motor.

I screwed up when I said R-1 was open, it is probably R-3 since that is used by all the speed except the top speed, which is the only one you have.

Attached is a parts manual for a 1988 Marathon (X-444 is the 4 wheel version). The resistor coil box is on Pg-FF1. I'm pretty sure it is Item-23 that is bad, but which one is bad ought to be obvious, it'll be burnt in two.

You should be able to get the needed parts from one of BGW's site sponsors: https://www.buggiesgonewild.com/site-sponsors.php

Simply a matter of reading a schematic.

Question Re: Only runs at top speed

You were so helpful last time-
Wondering if you can help again-
This time around- our cart is running without us touching the pedal.
The only way to get it to stop is to turn it to neutral.
Any advice?

Don't have to look at a schematic for that one, the solenoid isn't de-energizing when you take your foot off the pedal.

Could be the pedal isn't returning to the full upright position. (Bad spring or stiff pivot or blocked by debris)

Could be Pedal switch is bad or maladjusted.

Could be welded contacts in the solenoid.

I just fixed a Yamaha with this exact failure (and a melted contact board for the accelerator) and it was the same resistor failed and welded to WOT accelerator board contacts.

A good reason to avoid cheaping out on batteries. He used Rural Kings, and drove up a lot of hills, and they ran out of juice while uphill (5% grade) everything got hot, started smoking, and he couldn't get it to stop and leaped off and it caught fire. Was one heck of a mess repairing and cleaning everything up

Noticed you got Duracells, which are not any better than Rural Kings. I'd advise getting Trojans or US Batteries at least (low voltage = heat)

Run time on cheap batteries is not good at all. Turns a lot of things into resistors, such as wiring.
