Default 36 volts Powerwise II charger problems

Hi guys, newbie here looking for some help. Purchased a used charger from ebay (pawn shop) to replace a stolen one. When i received it I noticed the wire insulation pulled away from the handle so I thought I'd take it apart and fix it. Inside I found the sense wire stripped and connected to the white wire (pic included). After many hours of research I came to the conclusion that the sense wire didn't go to the white wire it goes to the black wire or negative. I took the charger cover off and cut the sense wire and connected it to the terminal at the amp gauge like shown in the Lester troubleshooting manual wiring diagram. Found a guy with a cart (mine is out of town), plugged it up, gauge showed the unit charging for about 15 seconds before a big puff of smoke. Found the red wire from the center diode terminal to the charge controller burnt.
Should the sense wire have been left on the white wire? Not sure where to go next. Tested diodes, they're fine. Thanks

Default Re: 36 volts Powerwise II charger problems

Got it figured out. Somewhere, somebody added another relay to this thing. Evidently it was to turn on the charger regardless the amount of voltage in the batteries. I removed it all and reconnected, the charger works normally.
