Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
I wouldn't run it like that anymore.
Take the belt off, remove the driven clutch, take it apart, and see what is wrong with it. It might also be a good time to remove the cover from the drive clutch to see if it has a problem too. |

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
I can't really tell but I'm sticking with my original guess. The clip that holds the helix in place looks like it came off. The inner sheave is jumping all over the place.

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
Just be careful of the spring pressure when working with the clutch. Good luck.

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
Any suggestions on taking it apart then? It looks like it has a pretty big spring in it.

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
If the clutch has come apart, it will want to push the outer sheave off when you remove the retaining nut. In the past, I've used a couple of long 2x2 pieces of lumber to overcome the spring pressure. Then release the pressure slowly.

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
I use a ratchet strap on mine. Just be careful not to overtighten and bend the outer sheave. Just enough tension on the strap to hold the parts in place while you take the nut off. Once that's done, just back the strap off one crank at a time and it will come loose. Don't lose the keyway. Take some pics. Field6565 is prob right about the snap ring. I bet it's gone and the spring is pushing the helix all the way out. Without any preload on that spring, the clutch is just moving all over the place. Look for damage to the helix and slide shoes.

Re: Yamaha clutch is acting really weird
What is the best way to remove this clutch? I can't get it freed up.
