correct installation of clutch weights
The car I just bought had no drive belt. I bought a new belt and while trying to install it, I noticed the primary drive clutch made a lot of noise when it was rotated so I took the black cover off and all these weights fell out! Only 1 is still in place. I am wondering what is the correct positioning of these weights? Also I am still trying to get the belt on. Any help is greatly appreciated! Mahalo!

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
buy a new one..... when the weights fall off, it's them telling you they no longer want to be apart of that clutch. they are as stubborn as a 16 yr old and will continue to try not being a part of that clutch if you put them back. It's time to just let them go. besides you cant get parts for those clutches so unless you can build your own your pretty much screwed

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
Can a new clutch still be bought? This clutch dosen't look bad at all. These weights are all like new and they each have a little hole in them which I think is for some kind of rubber band to hold them in place when they are at "rest"? There were some little pieces of what looks like a rotten rubber band when I took the black cover off. Everything else looks nice and shiny like its not that old. Putting it back together dosen't look like it would be very hard as long as I have all the pieces? Does anyone sell parts for these clutches? I am going out shortly to have another look! Thanks!

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
Aloha! I will definately consider a new clutch. My clutch is a Comet Duster. There are some clutches on Ebay I am looking at. I did manage to reinstall the weights in the correct orientation. It was not hard, and from what I can see if the clutch is functioning properly, they should stay put. That being said, should the outer (aft) sleeve slide freely into the cone that contains the weights? The reason I ask is that in trying to install the belt (the #27077-G02 is way too short!) I was trying to separate the sleeves on the drive side to give myself enough slack to work the belt over thr driven pulley, but they would not move at all. I determined that #27077-G02 that I bought could not possibly be the correct belt for my car as it is much too short. My Neighbor had given me a #23557-G1 belt with the car that was given to him by a EZ GO mechanic who said that it was not the correct P/N belt, but that it might work? I can almost get this belt on! I got it over the drive side sleeves, and can almost get it over the driven side, but it just won't stretch quite enough. I will try again on Sunday. If I could get the extra slack from separating the drive sleeves, I could use this belt. Is it possibble I have a 1988 car? Does anyone know if this one year had a bit longer belt? Does anyone know the P/N and specs for the 88 model year belt? I can not see that either the 76-87 belt (p/n 14153-G1) or the 89-92 belt (p/n 27077-G02) is going to fit my car. Both will be way too short! Anybody know anything about the 88 model? Is the belt way longer than those other years? Does anyone know what years/models the p/n 23557-G1 belt fits? I hope whoever reads this can understand what I am trying to explain? If I knew for sure what year my car was, that would make this alot easier! Thanks in advance! George

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
why didn't you say your clutch was a replacement comet in the first place if you already knew that, kinda a need to know thing when trying to help someone. If your clutch is indeed a comet duster then you might be able to find parts for it. if it's an ezgo then no. since comet has gone under now, finding parts for them might prove somewhat of a challenge.
The 88 only belts are the longest ones, somewhere around 45.5" but the 87 and below are 45". That doesn't seem "way to short" to me. the later years 2 strokes end up being 40.75" and 41". All these measurements are approximations. I really hate stating lengths on belts cause sure enough somebody's going to grab their tape measure and when their belt is not exactly what I said, they'll be back saying WTF, your wrong...... |

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
I wondered if it was a duster. parts are out there at sled supply houses, google duster 94c.
Try pushing and twisting the driven clutch movable sheave to start the belt a little into the secondary giving you some slack to get it on. |

Re: correct installation of clutch weights
From looking at the photos of new clutches, I can see that the space between my sleeves is too close together and the other aft sleeve seems to be siezed on the shaft and won't move. It is stuck there. This would explain why I can't get enough slack to install the belt! No matter what, it looks like I have to get this clutch off? Any tricks to removing it or do you have to have the removal bolt? I have to retract my earier comment that the belts I have are "way too short". First I have to get this clutch sorted out! I am going to go take some photos to post. Thanks! George
