05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
hello, i have a 2005 ds 48v IQ it keeps burning up speed sensors i have put 2 OEM sensors in it from the local club car dealer, i have searched this forum and a few others but can not find anything that really relates to why the speed sensors fail. the second speed sensor lasted about 2 days and im lost as to why or where to start to try and figure out what is going on with this thing

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
I never heard of that unless you have a controller +15v or +5v power supply issue.
in the speed sensor 3-pin connector, How much voltage do You read between? Green wire and Black wire |

What are the symptoms of a burned speed sensor?

sergio -- on the green wire i have 4.99 and on the red wire i show 15.33
robluv -- this particular cart is goes in to limp mode and moves really slowly. at first it would take off like it has full power then it would restrict itself back to limp mode |

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
The voltages are right on spec.
Is this a GE (flat snap sensor) or ADC motor (top hat 2 screws sensor)? Is the magnet ok? You can use a piercing or back probe on the sensor Green wire to see if the voltage changes from 0 to 5v as you turn one wheel by hand (only lift one wheel, the other wheel needs to be on the ground). If You do see a pulse, when you replace the sensor do you disconnect the batteries? If so, try disconnecting the batteries for more than 10 minutes to allow for the filter capacitors to discharge and try the old speed sensor again. Maybe the controller is having issues and the power cycle is what is fixing the sensor reading. |

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
i disconnected the batteries for about 15-20 minutes and tried the old sensor still in limp mode didnt change anything i will check the pulse in the morning it is starting to rain really hard right now and its on the lift outside

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
I have heard of that make sure you have a diode across the coil of your solenoid

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
it does send a pulse on the green wire and the diode is in place and tests ok

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
If You are getting a pulse the issue is You have a bad controller, the speed sensors are fine.
The diode on the solenoid has no impact on the speed sensor operation. |

Re: 05 DS keeps burning up speed sensors
If the diode is missing or open and the collapsing coil of the solenoid sends a high voltage pulse on the negative line it could easily take out the speed sensor rated at 30 V.
