My 2003 ds did same thing. The brake pad itself had come off metal holder. All pads were changed out over year ago[emoji35]. Mine is used on paved roads and flat ground.

Yeah. Cut the old cables and pull the cables out of the sheathing. Then use a 12-point 13mm socket to release the locking tabs that hold the brake cables in place. Spray with WD-40 before you hammer the socket over the clip. Then it'll pull right out.
