Default Getting sparks when I hook up battery.

New to golf carting. Had some corrosion on one of the batteries and I pulled the battery out and cleaned it up along with the battery tray. Now when I try to reconnect the neg and pos cables I get sparks. What am I doing wrong, I know that I am hooking the cables up correctly.
Thanks,
Beltfed

First of all what make, model and year of cart as well as type of controls used. You are posting in Club Car section so you must have a Club Car make cart. Now what year? check serial number below passenger glove box and advise us what numbers are. That will give us a idea what you have and how we can help you with your problem? Some Club Cars have switches that must be taken care of ( switched ) before unhooking batterys and others are much less complicated and will be easy to diagnose.

If you have a run/tow switch... make sure it's to tow before connecting any cables,
OR... double/triple check your cable wiring with these diagrams!

don't know much about electric carts, but i did learn a thing or two about electricity when i went through my union aprenticeship. some minor arcs are normal when you make a live connection. if your circuit is complete....i.e. if you are pulling a load some where your connection is going to draw some amps. more load = more amps. are you getting little sparks, or a welding type arc? there's enough power in your batteries to seriously cook something (like a big piece of meat, or you) if you do it wrong.

Flip the tow/run switch to the TOW position. If it still sparks after that, you may have a defective tow/run switch or a controller that is soon to go bad. It's also a possibility that your headlights may be turned on... or your brake lights may be stuck... Anything that can draw power will cause an arc.

anything that draws a load can potentially arc if it has a contanct that is broken and then closed. a resister by its very definition draws a load just by resisting the current.

I have a 2006 club car precedent and the same thing happens when I hook mine up. It has always done it. I was told that it was normal for that to happen when in run mode. I can't remember if it does it in the tow position. I would love to find a wiring diagram for that cart

A voltage reducer that does not have a trigger wire will also cause a spark..
