All controllers should have a max voltage rating. I would not push any controller beyond it's rated max voltage spec.

I agree, but where do you find that information? After all the name plate says 48 volts but 48 volts is dead batteries even with lead acid batteries. I read the manual on one of Curtis's higher end controllers and the voltage range you wanted was programmed in software from 36 volts all the way to 96 volts. The oem controllers are a black hole as far as information is concerned. So i am banking on(and you might say actively searching for:) the voltage limit protection circuit.
