Re: How often to add water to batteries
For sure, glad you had them ready to post when I cant find them (most pics live on my phone, and when the phone dies, some things will inevitably be lost)

Re: How often to add water to batteries
Those pictures are worth at least a thousand words ... your "possibility of a chain-fire with hydrogen gas filled tubes" is pretty much the icing on the cake in this discussion ... and the tops off of the batteries!! Thanks for sharing your photo collection.

Re: How often to add water to batteries
Hydrogen gas is byproduct of normal lead-acid battery operation and battery explosions do occur (rarely), but if they aren't connected together with "fuses", only one blows up instead of the whole set.

Re: How often to add water to batteries
I decided to check my water levels since it has been so hot here lately.
I just checked two weeks ago and all was well. Today I found two cells where the water had just dropped to barely expose the plates. I guess I'll monitor it more frequently ! |

Re: How often to add water to batteries
Lucky for you, the tallest part you see isnt actually the plate itself, but the dividers.

Re: How often to add water to batteries
FWIW I check mine every 2 weeks when not being used during the winter.
Every time it comes off the charger during the summer season which is daily. Takes maybe 10 minutes to check. But having a dry cell can cost$’s if going unnoticed. Similar to checking the oil in your mower every week before cutting grass. Let it get low and you buy new mower when motor locks up. |

Trojan has an interesting video showing the battery manufacturing process. From the video, the lead plates appear to be about 1/2" (or so) below the top of the separators. Here is Trojan's video ... a pretty cool manufacturing process! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt3NvFK70rE |
