Default 1994 DS Running too FAST

Long story. This buggy is used at a campground that has a 5 mph speed limit. All summer at slow speed it immediately went too fast when micro switches kicked in. It also surged when going slow and smelled of gas.

I removed the carb and disassembled it. It was extremely clean inside but I removed the jet and used carb cleaner with small cleaning wires and cleaned the carb inside and out paying attention to all the tiny holes. Float and needle valves looked great.

I reinstalled the carb and backed the idle screw all the way out and adjusted the mixture screw almost all the way in.

I also adjusted the throttle cable where it comes out of the micro switch box so the ignition circuit kicks on just before the carb throttle wire began to move.

The result was excellent. It ran excellent at a low speed and nice at high throttle inputs for about two days. Then all of a sudden all it wants to do is run at very high speeds even when the throttle is just pushed enough to activate the micro switch.

What happened?? I did not touch anything. However three days ago I swapped out the rear springs for heavy duty one after adding a rear seat and changed the snubber in the process. Things got bumped around in the process but the car ran well for three days after the swap.

What is causing the rpms to go so high all of a sudden?

P.S. This was a privately owned golf cart used by friends of mine for the last 20 years and has not seen the typical hard service live of many older golf carts.

Check to make sure the throttle plate closes completely.

Club Car carburetors tend to have their throttle plates ingested by the engine (the two little screws wear out that hold the plate to the shaft) and causes nothing but WOT.

I have found the plates anywhere from the very top center of the piston (barely clears the valves ) to the bottom of the crankcase. I'm always surprised it never destroys the engine.

Check the cable running from the governor to the carb and make sure its not sticky. Any "roughness" at all in the cable movement can cause issues.
