Default Isolate Start from Charge on starter/generator???

I have a 16hp vanguard in my cart and i have it set up to stay running. Only problem is if is sit at an idle too long it will drain my battery because the starter generator is going back into start mode at low rpm. Is there any way to isolate the start and charge command? Ignition on my cart has 3 positions like a car ignition but it's currently wired to start in the second position instead of the 3rd like a car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My starter/generator has 2 posts on the end and 3 around the side (i'll try to post a picture soon).

Does the 16hp have it's own electric start? If it does, I'd pull the old starter/generator and go with a chevy alternator. Easy adaption as it has a built in voltage regulator.

Engine does not have it's own starter but it does appear to have it's own charging system. I need to test the wires to make sure the charging system on the engine is working and maybe just use the starter generator as a starter only. What do you think?

Perhaps a smaller pulley on the start/gen would give more voltage at
idle? However that would turn the engine slower when first starting.

Perhaps an old 50s voltage regulator.and a rewire.

I have the same cart that I am just finishing a low budget restoration. Nice to see Cushman did make at least 2 of these carts! Mine has the original 8 HP Kohler engine. I just installed my new clutch that I had to research for a couple weeks to come up with a part number for it ( $410+ with tax ) I hooked up my wiring as original and it starts and shuts off with the pedal. Still working the bugs out drives good though.

Wire it so that the solenoid is pulled in when the keyswitch is in the 'start' position. When the keyswitch returns to the 'run' position, the solenoid should drop out and not drain the battery. Use the charging circuit on the Briggs to charge the battery. I fused mine at 20amps.

sterling40 please let me know if you have had any luck finding information on your cart. I've never talked to anyone who has the same cart as me. Are they valuable??? Keep in touch.

Thanks.
