Default High Speed Gear Set E-Z-Go Electric 6:1 Ratio 1988 & Up

Before purchasing the high speed gear set i would like to know how involved the installtion is. Can anyone send this to me or explain it. I have a 2006 EZGO TXT series cart with the Jakes long travel lift kit. Thanks

It can be a little testy the first time it is done...you will need new freeze plugs so remember to get them before install, also make sure you have some sort of sealant for the diff pan and gear fluid ready for after install. Involves dropping rear end, removing both axles, removing diff cover, its a good idea to take a pic once you get to this point so you know what it should look like on the inside when putting back together. Remove freeze plugs from both sides, I usually just take a pick and punch a hole through the center and pry them off through that, remove both snap rings and the bearing will come out with a little push from the inside. You will also need a press as the small gear is pressed on.

Thanks for the quick response. Sounds like a little more than i want to tackle. Do you really gain 12mph? Is it really worth doing?

It is if you want to get going a little quicker for a decent price without having to upgrade wiring, controller, motor and so forth which can get pricey. Generally speaking it usually gives you between 8-12 mph and most people are very happy with the results. Keep in mind high speed gears will take away from tourqe so this is usually done to non-lifted street carts rather than something you plan on hunting with or using on very hilly terrain!

I have installed the high torque motor and controller and this thing will climb trees. It is so impressive, but I want to go faster as well. I know adding the high speed gear I will loose some torque, but with all this combined is it worth it or am i just wasting time and money?

newt maybe you should consider one of the High torque/High Speed switchable motors.

There was a thread recently about them. Seems to be the best of both worlds.

I didn't change gears, but I did tear mine apart and replace all bearings and seals and it wasn't a big deal. Just thought I'd give you another data point. I bought the freeze plugs, bearings and seals in advance and think I had it torn apart and back together in one day.
