36 V battery draining too soon
Hello -
I was driving my cart around town yesterday for a total of approximately 5-7 miles before coming home for a couple hours without recharging my batteries. I decided to go back out on the cart and got about a mile or two from my house before my cart stopped running. I have a digital volt meter from Scotty B at Carts Unlimited which indicated around 30-32V when not running, but shot down to around 20v when I pressed on the gas pedal. I am a little perplexed because this is the 1st time I've been out in town when my batteries died and figured that this would be plenty of voltage to keep the cart running. I was thinking I could at least get some power with as little as 10V. Can someone please shed some light on whether this is normal or if I may have some battery /mechanical issues? Thank you in advance. |

Re: 36 V battery draining too soon
You may have bumped into the Under Voltage cutoff. Where is the slider set to? (Probably set to 27V for a 36V battery pack)
Cart batteries should never be discharged below 50% SoC, which is 36.3V for a 36V battery pack. Attached is a Voltage vs SoC chart for Trojan batteries and clones. Battery voltage drops when amps are being drawn (aka being under load) and you should avoid dropping below 1.75VPC (Volts per Cell), which is 31.5V for a 36V pack, and never ever drop them below 1.5VPC, or 27V for a 36V pack. When battery manufacturers do non-destructive testing on their products, they only take them down to 1.75VPC. When the voltage drop below 1.50VPC, irreversible physical damage to the battery's plates begins to occur. Since your battery pack has been loaded down to 20V (1.11VPC), some physical damage may have occurred. Last edited by JohnnieB; 02-28-2016 at 04:01 PM.. Reason: Forgot the attachment |
