Default main positive post corrosion

My main positive post just started being covered with corrosion, my batteries are less that a year old, I am in the process of "breaking them in" as I have read on this site, and when not in use I keep a "Save A battery" hooked up to it.

Is that wrong? My digital volt meter has read that it is at 54.0 volts when the "Save A Battery " is hooked up.

What is wrong?

Thanks

You may have a broken seal around the base of the lead post...take some anti-corrosion spray or paste or just a heavy grease and smear it around the area where the lead post and the case meet. Do not block the part of the post that contacts the cable especially with anti-corrosion spray or paste because it blocks the electrical connection. Many use dielectric grease. The other thought that can occur would be if that battery has a shorted plate it would cause the electrolyte to boil easily...so if that battery shows low in voltage compared to the other batteries and if it's using more water than the other batteries than its probably has a shorted plate and is a bad battery. If that's the case a used battery of the same approximate age would be the best replacement. Hope this gives you something to check.

Did your old batteries leak a lot of acid onto the frame area and is it still there? This can help the return and formation corrosion in the battery compartment. You could also have corrosion inside the battery cable that is causing this... Also not sure if 54 might not be too much voltage in the float mode and is causing some outgassing, I say this as my DPI holds my pack at 52.9 and never higher than 53.0 volts...

My DPI voltage is much higher than 53 v. Not around it now but I'd say 60v.

Keep in mind that there are at least 3 stages of charge in a DPI and I was speaking of the final or float voltage being 53 volts...

The Bulk stage is 60ish and the finish/equalizing charge can be as high as 65ish...

If you were upward of 60 volts in float you could be causing damage your batteries...

Double checking and 54.0 volts is ok in float mode...

Teecro, the cart has been used every day or two so it hasn't been on constant charge more than a couple of days. So I may have not gotten to a final stage. Will check this evening to see where it's at now.

Here is an interesting article I found that fits in with what you are talking about.
Quote:
Corrosion on the terminals is due to hydrogen gas being released from the acid in the battery. It mixes with other things in the atmosphere under the hood and produces the corrosion you see on the terminals. Generally, if the corrosion is occurring on the negative terminal, your system is probably undercharging. If on the positive side, it is probably overcharging. Most often it will be seen on the negative side because the battery is usually in an undercharged situation. This is just the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.
My suggestion for preventing corrosion would be to keep the terminals tight 100 in/lbs.
