Default Need Help/Information re electric engine

In June of 2017, I purchased a 2010 Yamaha JDRE Electric Cart. No warranty provided.

In February of 2018, the electric motor failed. The dealer replaced it with a Hitachi motor. $780 One year warranty.

In December of 2020, the electric motor failed again. Speed control board and some other gizmo need replacing too. Nidec motor being recommended. $1900 So far, the dealer is not offering any type of discount.

Hoping someone would have info that would help me understand why a second motor would die. Any known problems with the replacement Hitachi motor? Any problems with the Yamaha electric cart in general?

Thanking you in advance for any info you can provide.

The ydre hitachi motor is known for problems, especially with big tires, or high speed gears. And "revision C" (newest) is even worse, smaller brushes were used. Basically, if you have big tires or HS gears AND an aftermarket controller, you have a Hitachi munching machine.

Thanks for the info. I do have big tires and live in a golf cart community. So, it does get a lot of high speed use.

Do you know anything about the Nidec engine that's being recommended?

I think I'd look at what the site sponsors here have to offer as far as upgraded motors and controllers/electronics. Most of these parts are reasonably easy to install yourself or if you have a handy friend. I think you'd save some money and get a superior product and much better performance. Carts Unlimited, Revolution Golf Cars, and Plowmans come to mind.

Call Don plowman. He will sort you out ScottyB also has controllers and motors to fix this. Plowman specializes in yamahas and will bend over backwards to help. CGtech is the yamaha repair master. I'd do an alltrax and new motor. So so much better.

Never even heard of that motor brand at all, so I'd totally skip that mess. Let someone else be the Guinea pig. I've had success with the fsip motors. But, stock motor controller cant properly power an upgrade motor very well at all. Is your motor controller stock?

Quit wasting your time with the dealer. Call Don Plowman at Plowman's Carts and he'll make a great recommendation and his service/support is unmatched

Just wanted to give a final update on this thread. I did hook up with Don Plowman and installed his Riot motor upgrade kit. I had a couple of issues but Don walked me through them and everything came out great. Love the new power and speed. Thanks to all for the advice given.
