1266R-5351 sounds like the wrong controller for a '04 Club Car DS. Do you know the model number of the original controller. I think the original should be one of the following part numbers:

1510-5201, 1510A-5250 or 1510A-5251

1266R has a completely different pin-out on the 16-pin connector and is not compatible with the above listed controllers.

A 1266R controller might work in the Club Car DS cart if the controller comes with a harness adapter to correct the 16-pin interface.

Thanks for all your help. 1510A-5251 is what I pulled out. Looks like I ordered the wrong controller. Any suggestion what controller is a good upgrade? I wanted to go to a higher volt controller as I have lifted tires and working in loose sand most of the time.

Skip Curtis and go straight to Alltrax. Alltrax has been the biggest name in aftermarket golf cart controls for about 20 yrs. These controls have the only reverse polarity protection and 2 yr no questions asked warranty. Plus free programming software, diagnostic features and more

So I got the new Alltrex part and before I put it in, I was testing my batteries and they are reading over 12.5 volts on the multimeter. My son seems to think this isn’t right. Before I trash a $600 controller I wanted to run this past you to see why this might be happening. I replaced the 8 volt (6) Trojan batteries about one year ago and haven’t been used very much.

Your 8 volt batteries are reading at 12+ volts? That does not sound right at all to me. your total pack voltage would be 75 if that was the case. Can you double check that you do, in fact, have 8 volt batteries. If they do there would be 4 fill caps on each battery. If you have 6 fill caps per battery it would appear you have the wrong ones in there.

If you are getting crazy readings the multimeter needs a new 9v battery.
If the 12v batteries are 12.5v they are fine.
