G16 starts once but not a second

I have a G 16 I bought a couple weeks ago. Previous owner said it might need carb adjusted, had to choke til got real warm. Ran great when picked up, cleaned carb, ran great in neutral went to take test ride nothing, (WON'T START) just click, checked solienod power in but not out, replaced with new one. Still nothing click , took starter out brushes burnt , springs broke, put new one in. Now it starts in neutral on first try, if you let off pedal and try again it won't? but wait 5min and it will start again. I think starter relay?, O in gear, pulls a little and wont start. Thanks for any help just want to fix without replacing everything.
