Default How do I even up the brake cables?

Under the floorboard, where the 2 cables are connected in the housing, the right rear brake cable is slightly more loose than the right. This makes the left cable pull more, and has bent the long screw. I have straightened the long screw, but need to equalize the 2 cables so it doesn't happen again, and so the brakes are pulled evenly. Anyone know how to even these 2 up? I'm working on brakes tonight, and will have rear wheels off, if that matters/helps.

Thanks for your help.

I don't think there isn't any except the self adjusters inside the drums. (But I might be wrong. )
The trick is that the cables have to go slack for the self adjusters to adjust.

Also, check for any bent/broken brackets that hold the cable sheath in place.

Also, the cables are exposed to a nasty environment, make sure they both slide freely.

Can't help any more than that, I troubleshoot electrical stuff rather than mechanical.
Hopefully, somebody that knows more about brakes will drop in.

Dont forget the springs on the end of the cables take out the slack check for broken springs.

Mine on my 1998 aren't even either, despite my best efforts. I'm guessing that 14 years with even tension on two cables of different length may cause them to stretch at different rates. Mine stops evenly, so it's not causing a problem.

If you haven't done so, download the Owner's, Service, and Parts manuals from the stickies. There's a whole chapter on brakes, but nothing besides the star adjusters would affect this.

Thanks for all of the help. I replaced the cables, and added a wide washer between the nut and the buckle, sort of lie a spread footing. Worked great.
