If the wire was loose inside the crimp, it could have been just that connection rather than the resistor, but whatever it was, I glad you got it going.

I took another peek at the pictures you posted, the stacking order on the solenoid's big terminals is wrong.
The high current cable goes on first, then the red wire, then the resistor.
