The controller that has a "Freedom Chip" is a PDS (Model year 2000 and up), with a 1997 cart, you have a DCS (Model year 1995-1999).

Replace the stock controller with an Alltrax XCT48400-DCS and you'll get in the low 20's on stock height (18" tall) tires with a 36V battery pack.

That about sums it up, the cart should have a F&R shift lever just below the seat cushion. DCS carts make more speed than series drive carts and more torque than PDS drive carts. With the XCT control this is great little all around cart.

Thank you, I was lost. I want as much speed as possible.

Speed cost money, how fast do you want to go?

An Alltrax XCT controller (with appropriate solenoid and high current cables with a good battery pack) will get you into the low 20's at 36V, mid 20's at 42V or upper 20's at 48V on 18" tall tires and 12.44:1 gears in the differential.

Tires taller than 18" will increase the top speed, but reduce the torque where rubber meets road. Same with numerically lower gears in the differential.

Then there are high-speed motors, which produce less low end torque than standard speed and high-torque motors.

The trick is deciding what the end-goal for the cart is and building towards that goal.

For the OP, as Johnnie has stated, speed costs money.....

How much are you willing to spend? I know of a setup that can give you massive torque with 29MPH, but it will cost you about $2500-3000 (HPEVS AC motor conversion). Scotty has some kits that will cost you less, but still give you serious speed/torque results.....

If I can go 22 to 25mph that would be great. What kind of costs we talking? Sorry but I'm new to the electric cart world, I've always owned gas. My last cart was a ezgo with a 440 articat snowmobile motor, it did 55mph and could have did more.

Use the XCT500DCS control, 400 super solenoid, and a 2g cable set. This combo should get you were you want to be (or darn close depending upon the condition of the 19 yr old cart) with the stock motor. The 500a control comes with the cooling fan installed and will run cooler than the 400a unit under the same loads..... The 500 will also work well with any aftermarket speed motor you choose later on
