I may have just killed my batteries...
Well I should receive the bonehead of the weekend award. I went to top off my batteries with distilled water and began to smell an unfamiliar smell in the garage that got so bad that I had to open the doors and set up fans. I couldn't figure out what was wrong until it dawned on me that I used a distilled water bottle with glycerin in (for a fog machine). I mixed way too much last Halloween and ended up pouring it into the water jug.
How do I fix this?? Dump them out and put new electrolytes in? |

Well I can't give you advice on the batteries. I don't know enough.
The age old "waste not, want not" strikes another... I've made similar mistakes. Which is why Sharpies are a "tool" not far from reach in all areas of my garage now. Hope you can save the batteries! |

Re: I may have just killed my batteries...
I'm no expert by no means but I did find this on google.
You may have to put up with the smell though if you decide to keep using them. Here is the link: https://priorart.ip.com/IPCOM/000085786 Abstract The use of glycerine, which has a high-boiling point, as an electrolytic solvent for battery related applications, uniquely permits the use in high-operating temperatures, while maintaining the stability of the glycerine based electrolyte. Most prior art storage cell batteries utilize a water base electrolyte, which inherently limits the operating temperature ranges of the battery. In addition, the water based electrolytes have a relatively high-evaporation rate, which affect the stability of such a water base electrolytic battery. |

I'm not the science guy but you may have mixed something that is highly explosive.
I would check it out right now. |

That link discussing the use of glycerin as an electrolyte is interesting. The % of glycerin would have been very small because I only topped off the batteries and the solution used was only 25%/75% glycerin to distilled water ratio.

What did you decide to do?
I would contact the battery manufacturer and see what they say. |

I have no first hand knowledge about it, nor did I stay at Holiday Inn, but from that link, I doubt the batteries are ruined.

Make 'em sign an NDA, in case you stumbled upon a new and improved electrolyte.
