Re: 48v solid state conversion 82 marathon
Well, I'm not close to my crystal ball right now but, if I was I would look into your motor's past and see what kind of use or abuse it has taken for how many years to give an educated guess of how long it will stand up to whatever use you have in mind. lol
Generally speaking best practice is to send the motor out now for a refresh... armature cleaned up, new brushes, and bearing. Then I would say a minimum of 2-5 years depending upon it's use. Some people get more and some people get less? A lot depends upon it's current condition. |

IIRC, the Yale area of MI is fairly flat, which is also easier on motors, however you said campgrounds and those may not be in the Yale area. Your motor is perpendicular to the rear axle, so you might have difficulties finding replacement motors. |

EMP, PQ, Luna are all excellent choices for motor refurbishing and modification.

Of the 3 EMP has the most to offer in terms of modifications. |

Re: 48v solid state conversion 82 marathon
I ran my series motor for quite a while with an Alltrax AXE 4855, which is 48 volts and up to 500 amps. I only hit 500 amps once, when I tried really hard. I did tear it apart and replaced the bearing. The brushes were fine, but that's generally a function of run time, something most of us don't know. There are detailed instructions in the Technician's Repair and Service Manual in the Stickies. Yours may be called something different, since it's older than mine.
After brushes and bearing, heat is the thing to look out for. Mine would get borderline too hot when driven a long time with two passengers. You can use a heat gun if you have one, but I just used a licked finger. Not exact, but if it sizzles, it's time to let it rest. |

The reversing contactor option I purchased with the conversion kit from scottyb is the bees knees!
