Default Looking for ideas for replacing 1988 EZGO Marathon Engine

Hey all,

I am new to the site but have just got the cart fever. Last week I purchased a 1988 EZGO Marathon for about $100 and am excited to get it running. The problem is the engine sat out in the weather for the last 2 years and the clutch seems to be seized. Everything else seems to be functioning normally and in good shape.

After looking at prices of replacement parts, I am starting to think more and more about getting a different engine. I have the next 3 weeks off to tinker with this thing and am really excited about getting it running.

My question to yall: Is there a different type of engine that I could drop in this cart with minimal modifications (besides replacing it with an exact model). The engine currently is a Robins 244 cc EC25-2PG.

I was considering a horizontal shaft briggs but have no idea how that would mount without a lot of fabricating. My understanding is if I go to a 4 cycle, I would need to replace the rear axle as well.

Any ideas with specific engine recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to everybody in advance!

Jeremy

Have you checked out the big block section of the forum? It's all about engine swaps and the like. And yes, you're gonna have to do some fab work and put in a different rear axle (one that has a reverse gear) to make a 4 cycle engine work.

Should you decide that you wanna go the engine swap route, let me know! I'm looking for the exact motor you're thinking of taking out.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely let you know as soon as I figure out what to do. If I change the engine out, I will let you know. I will also re-post in the other section. Thanks again for the help!
