Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
The Serial number on right below dash cubby has last digits of 87. It is for sure a trike. THe motor sticker does state 3pg but there is no vacuum line the fuel pump bolts direct to crankcase using two 10mm bolts. looking to order parts has been confusing because all parts I see to fit show to fit 89-93. I will try dumping the secondary filter and cranking it tonight or tomorrow. If this still doesn't do anything then I'll order pump. I'm assuming order for 89 model. Like I stated i just came into this cart but it is a true trike. It was owned originally by military golf course.

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
Well it sure is a trike, if it is a 3PG the muffler will be on its side and the clutches will be aligned front to back. If this is the case I am going to be choking on a large portion of humble pie.

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
Muffler is on its side and clutches align front to back. I have access to a 87 4 wheeler frame but it was a 2 pg with the clutches aligning side to side. As well as the engine sticker is intact and states a 3pg. But hey.. from what I've seen it doesn't make since. I will look at the entire serial tag tonight to see what it has on it.

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
Dave, You eat the humble pie and I'll just stand here with my ukelele looking like an idiot ....
ALTHOUGH - If Uncle Sam could be talked into a $3200 toilet seat, I wouldn't doubt that there may have been a number of unsold or mid-production trikes from 87 (the last year they went out) that got the shiny new 3PG engines before the public did (think about my cart, 1988 was that one morphodite year that included both 2PG and 3PG parts, as well as a number of year-specific "changeover" parts) ... The way I see it, there are several variables (NONE of which are going to help you order parts, Scooby) - A) 87 is the the last year of the trike, so I would say go with 87-down mechanicals for the body, etc not counting the drivetrain, B) You have a Full 3PG engine/drivetrain setup, which easily could have been an early Military Production before the 3PG came out or a late production afterwards utilizing older NOS bodies (in which case I'd say stick with 93 3PG engine stuff either way) ... No matter what, I would definitely do some research and see if you can't find a Mil Number for the entire cart (Military Part or Vehicle ID) - chances are there may be a Military Parts Manual or ? floating around on the WWW, even a call to your local Armory (or a trip there to see if you can talk to one of the old-school CO's) might be a big help |

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
Well I didn't get a chance to look at the cart last night. Planning on trying some of the suggestions tonight. Brew thats why I put that in there that is what bought originally by military base. I'll have to look some more and see if I see any indication of a military id. Thanks to all for the input. I'll let y'all know how tonight goes.

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
I talked to a buddy of mine who has bought several Military Surplus vehicles, etc and has some good connections RE this sort of thing, he's out in Vegas picking up a Blazer right now but should be back by the weekend so hopefully he can glean a bit more info for you (I told him to look into a manual or ? - probably a longshot though)
I'll keep you posted, you do the same - this cart is starting to intrigue me for some sick twisted reason, hahahaha |

On my 3pg, the fuel pump is bolted to the piece of metal on the frame beside the fuel tank. You can't really see it in the photo, but you can see the hose post filter to it. I'm with BCM on this - one of the oddest carts I've ever seen. |

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
scooter, we combined two 89 carts with the 3pg engine. one was a marathon and the other was a txt800. one had the remote fuel pump and on the other it was mounted on the engine. just saying.

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
Well it rained last night and tonight I'll be helping my bride with a project. But i did manage to get a few shots of the cart. Scooter one is showing the fuel pump direct to the crank case. Also the little red thing is the filter between the fuel pump and carb. Also is the serial tag that is on the cart. Just to make sure that it is stating a 87. Hope to try some stuff this weekend. Did go ahead and order a new fuel pump. Everything Carts has great customer service. (had to input that plug)

Re: 1987 Marathon 3PG wont run
OK ... one detail that the pics clear up is that the year is actually part of the Mfr code on the newer carts (such as my 1988 so that makes sense, 1989/3PG ...) Also, your pump looks to be the same as mine so with any luck, replacing it should do the trick (although I would still eliminate that second, unneccesary filter if it was my cart)
Oh, and if you aren't going to put that canopy back on there, I know a guy in Wisconsin who would gladly buy it from you (or at very least the support struts) -:) |
